GUNNAR was founded by Jenny Michaelson, a wife and mother concerned about vision problems experienced by her husband and son, and by Joe Croft, a technical engineer for Oakley. Their first prototype of GUNNAR Optiks Eyewear debuted in 2006, and GUNNAR was officially founded in 2007. The company took its name from Michaelson's young son. The first set of GUNNAR eyeglasses retailed in 2008.
